Our London Brick Journey

Meet Melissa, the Founder and Artistic Director of I AM BRICK.

A London based lover of all things nostalgic and British, Melissa discovered a unique looking brick, while digging up part of her London garden. This wasn’t just any brick though, this was a London Brick!

The London Brick has been in continuous production since 1877. It is recognised by its iconic 'frog' feature, an indentation in the top of the Brick which ensures quick and even heat distribution in the firing process. London Bricks in their bare form are a work of art and a thing of beauty. Pick one up and you can feel the balanced weight in your hands, the rough texture of the fired clay against your skin. They are versatile, hardy and stand the test of time.

As an Artist Melissa quickly discovered they are also great fun to paint, which is how the idea for I AM BRICK came about nearly 3 years ago.

Her design inspiration is derived from British music legends, pop culture and 80's nostalgia. Honouring the heritage of this unique building material, while reimagining it in iconic ways, fuels her creative and imaginative vision.

The latest Limited edition work titled ‘If pigs could fly’ launched at London’s iconic Battersea Power Station this year and has more recently been immortalised in a hardback book about the rebirth of the power station, having undergone a successful renovation.
