Behind the Brick

Meet Melissa, the Founder and Artistic Director of I AM BRICK.

A Londoner with a passion for all things nostalgic and distinctly British, Melissa’s journey began when she unearthed a unique brick while digging in her garden. But this wasn’t just any brick - it was a London Brick.

Melissa's creative vision draws inspiration from the iconic British music legends of the 70s, and the pop culture and unforgettable films of the 80s. The bold sounds and rebellious spirit of 70s bands like David Bowie, Pink Floyd and The Sex Pistols influence her work, while the colourful, larger-than-life aesthetics of 80s cinema and childhood nostalgia add a playful energy.

Her work reimagines the London Brick - a symbol of British heritage - through the lens of these musical and cinematic influences. Bright colours, striking patterns, and a sense of nostalgia define each piece, paying tribute to the iconic visuals and sounds that continue to inspire her.

Her latest limited edition piece, If Pigs Could Fly, was unveiled at the iconic Battersea Power Station in London. Recently, it was also immortalized in a hardback book that chronicles the remarkable transformation of the Power Station following its successful renovation.

London Brick 33

The London Brick has been continuously produced by Forterra since 1877. Its distinctive ‘frog’ - a recessed indentation on the top - plays a key role in the firing process, ensuring even heat distribution. In their raw form, London Bricks are both a work of art and an object of beauty. Holding one, you can feel its perfectly balanced weight and the coarse texture of the fired clay beneath your fingers. Built to last, they are as durable as they are versatile.

We have chosen the Forterra Heather model, known in the trade as LBC 33. Its rugged texture on two sides and deep frog indentation make it a standout choice.

Our very first Art Brick creation was the OG (Original Gold)—an LBC 33, hand-painted with four layers of luxurious, metallic bright gold paint.
